It doesn’t matter where you live. The owner seems to be everywhere. If you’re looking for used appliances, you can find them everywhere from Birmingham, Alabama to Yellowknife, Canada. If you happen to live in Yellowknife, you’ll have to scroll to the bottom of the page, but it’s easier than navigating downtown Yellowknife in the middle of winter.
Unfortunately, our search for used devices in Yellowknife was fruitless, so we had to keep looking. Apparently no one has ever used a device in a small Canadian town, so we expanded our search to include Vancouver, BC. We thought we would definitely find something there, but were told there are no used electronics stores in Vancouver. Perhaps the Friendly Landlord (FL) is also a patriotic American landlord who wants people to shop on his frontier.
Based on this assumption, we examined some towns south of the border (ie, the Canadian border). California is a large, overcrowded state with many renters and almost as many electrical stores, so we thought we were safe there. In California, FL has a menu you can use. You can choose your city, the type of device you want and even the price. We searched in Bakersfield for microwaves priced between $5 and $2,000 and came across the checkout page. In the thousand dollar range, we found a stainless steel oven and microwave to match. We found what we were looking for for less than a hundred dollars. Someone in nearby Porterville has a stainless steel microwave they’re willing to sell for $80. This is a private party. When we say FL is friendly, we mean it. He scours every nook and cranny of every city in America in search of something useful for his tenants.
Either he lives in Bakersfield. Probably the latter, because when we searched for microwaves in Huntington Beach, we only got a list of appliance stores in that city. Since he’s probably a snob who hasn’t been to a cheap surf town like Huntington, we checked out nearby Newport Beach, where many locals wouldn’t think of buying second-hand gear, even if they were rented. As expected, Newport only has two stores that sell used devices, while Huntington has 10. No, their relative populations play no part in the equation. They are about the same size. But thankfully we are reassured that the friendly hosts are not snobs. He’s just a mainland.
